New elementary school opens in Somerville

Buckley-Carpenter Elementary is now open and ready for students. Last week, Fayette County Schools put the finishing touches on Buckley-Carpenter and opened the doors to the community for Open House and Dedication Ceremonies.
During the ceremonies there were several elected officials that spoke about the new school and how this is a turning point for the community. Also in attendance were family members, players and students of Dan Buckley and Samuel Carpenter.
Buckley-Carpenter Elementary is a pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade school that replaced several schools throughout the county. Classes will take place mainly in the three different wings. Each wing belongs to certain grades and is color-coded to help the students know which hallway is theirs.
When students are not in their particular hallway, they will be led to the main hallway of the building that will lead them to different classrooms that every grade will take part in music, gym and computer, for example.
There is a nice playground behind the building, parking for staff in the front, and car and bus lanes to make dropping off and picking up students easier.
The next event at Buckley-Carpenter Elementary will be on Jan. 15. The District Wide Parent/Family Engagement Meeting will begin at 5 p.m. Following the meeting there will be a District Wide Spelling Bee starting at 7 p.m.
The following schools will be participating: East Junior High, West Junior High, Oakland Elementary, LaGrange-Moscow Elementary, Southwest Elementary, Buckley-Carpenter Elementary and Fayette Academy.
