Cross country traveler stops in Oakland

Pastor Walter “Chick” McGill, 68, a Knoxville native, is walking coast to coast, carrying a large American flag. He recently passed through Oakland on his way to the west coast.
When he reaches California, the historic flag will be the first one ever to be hand-carried “from sea to shining sea” by a veteran. McGill will be the second oldest male in history to make the 3200-mile cross-country trek.
“The Cross Country Flagman” began his pedestrian journey from Kill Devil Hills, NC on April 23rd, and expects to reach his final destination in Santa Monica, Calif. by his 69th birthday, February 2015. After completing over 1,100 miles on foot, McGill walked through Somerville, Oakland and Bartlett on his way to Memphis during the week of Aug. 25. He salutes every passing motorist as a gesture of honor and respect to his fellow Americans and seeks community involvement in the cause.
Calling this project the TransAmerican Crosswalk 2014, McGill is promoting “’a new birth of freedom’ and integrity in America, calling attention to the 10 Commandments, the Golden Rule, and the nation’s founding documents.” He also gives a memento of the walk to mayors in each town along the walk route.
