Child abduction a hoax

The previously reported child abduction attempt on Tomlin Road has been determined to be a hoax.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office issued the following statement just before 7 p.m. tonight.

The story of the child abduction was a hoax.  The child admitted to concocting the story because he was worried about getting in trouble for disobeying his mother earlier in the day.  The District Attorney’s Office will be contacted to determine if any charges will be placed regarding “false reporting.”

Our office appreciates the efforts of the media to get the information out as quickly as possible to the public.  Based upon the details we had at the time of the initial call, we had no choice but to treat the situation as being real.  We know that in child abduction cases, time is always of the essence.  In our position, we cannot afford to treat allegations such as these as “crying wolf” immediately, because doing so could have risked the lives of others.
